Features and application
The battery-powered WFD 1050 alternating field detector is used in civil engineering, for geophysical drilling tasks and in soil clean-up operations. Whenever digging or civil engineering work is carried out, the location of any power cables in the ground should be established beforehand. Damage to buried cables represents a considerable risk to human life and can result in material losses. Using the WFD 1050 handheld detector is a quick and easy way of avoiding accidents and interruptions to operation.
Design
The WFD 1050 detector is a handheld detector with a practical cylindrical shape. It is ruggedly built and is simple to use. It has both a visual indicator and an audible indicator. The visual indicator is in the form of an LED; another LED is used for monitoring the battery status. The built-in signal generator produces a pulsed indicator tone, the pulse frequency of which rises as you approach the cable you are looking for. The pulse signal is sufficiently loud that there is no need to wear headphones even in a noisy environment
How it works
Active power cables are surrounded by an alternating electromagnetic field, the extent of which is determined by the strength of the flow of current. This alternating field is detected by the WFD 1050 handheld detector and indicated by an audible signal. The detection range depends on the extent of the field, or the strength of the current in the underground cable. In favourable circumstances the range can be up to 5 m. If a small current is flowing, detection is successful only in the immediate vicinity of the cable.
